BID Needham Earns Five-Out-Of-Five-Star Designation

Needham, Mass. – Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Needham (BID Needham) has received five-out-of-five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in its annual quality and safety assessment of more than 4,500 hospitals across the country. The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating was awarded to only 13.5 percent of 4,586 hospitals in the United States.

“Our hardworking staff members have always been dedicated to providing the highest level of safety and quality of care for our patients, and this year in particular they have really stepped up to the plate and shown a renewed level of commitment as we fight through the COVID-19 pandemic together,” said John M. Fogarty, president of BID Needham. “This five-star rating is a true testament to their teamwork and perseverance.”

The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating summarizes a variety of measures across five areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. Once reporting thresholds are met, a hospital’s overall star rating is calculated using only those measures for which data are available, with the average being about 37 measures. This year, the CMS established a new 2021 methodology in five measure groups: Mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. This data, found under the CMS’ Hospital Compare tool, is available for consumers to help them compare performance measure information and make informed decisions about where to go for health care.
