Derenzo UnitThe Derenzo Unit is a 24-bed general medical/surgical/telemetry unit. Patients are admitted to the Derenzo Unit from the ED, PACU, physicians’ offices, and infrequently directly from their residence. The patient population on the Derenzo Unit is diverse and consists of patients who have medical diagnoses or have undergone abdominal, orthopedic, plastic, and urological surgeries, to name a few. All rooms on the Derenzo Unit are private.

The ICU is a 7-bed unit that provides critical care for medical, surgical and cardiac patients. Patients may be transferred to the ICU from the medical/surgical unit, the PACU, the ED, and from other units within the hospital. Patients are admitted to and discharged from the ICU per physician order. Treatment modalities available in the ICU include hemodynamic support, mechanical ventilation and other forms of respiratory support. The ICU also serves as a venue for various procedures and functions as a recovery room during off hours and weekends. All ICU nurses are ACLS certified.

The ED is a 19-bed unit that is stroke designated by the MA Department of Public Health. Attending physicians from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine provide round the clock coverage and medical direction of the BID-Needham Emergency Department. Telemedicine is used for all neurological emergencies. BIDN ED nurses are ACLS and PALS certified. We provide quality care for the pediatric, adult and geriatric population and can expedite care to BIDMC for our critically ill patients.

The Endoscopy Unit provides a convenient and comfortable setting for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures performed by board certified gastroenterologists. The remaining team consists of specialized RNs and techs. 

The Infusion Unit is an outpatient unit that provides the following services: blood transfusions, intravenous antibiotics, intravenous medication infusions and hydration. Procedures such as transesophageal echo, cardioversion, paracentesis and thoracentesis may be performed in the Endoscopy and Infusion Center in addition to other areas of the hospital.

The Division of Gastroenterology at BID–Needham provides the community with expertise in all areas of gastroenterology and hepatology (liver diseases). The Division is serviced by highly-trained,board-certified gastroenterologists who provide specialized care in the areas of esophageal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, liver diseases, disorders of the pancreas and biliary system, motility disorders, and inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).

We also provide clinical expertise in all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and perform more than 2,600 procedures each year.

Our procedure rooms are equipped with the latest technology for performing upper endoscopies and colonoscopies.

The Perioperative Services Department includes pre-admission testing, the Operating Room, and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU, or Recovery Room). The Perioperative team consists of registered nurses, surgical technologists, instrument and perioperative aides, a supply coordinator, surgical scheduler, and unit coordinator. Surgical services offered at BID-Needham include general surgery, orthopedic surgery (including total joint reconstruction as well as sports injury repair), plastic and cosmetic surgery, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) surgery, gynecologic surgery, and urologic surgery.
