Sociable volunteer service opportunities are available immediately in the hospital's Coffee Shop and Gift Shop. Both operations provide important services to patients and their families and donate their proceeds to the hospital. Volunteer work schedules are flexible and are typically divided into 2- or 3-hour shifts, depending on the volunteer's preference.
Volunteers range in age from 14 to 91, and they may live in any town served by the hospital: Dedham, Dover, Medfield, Needham, Newton, Norwood, Wellesley, Westwood and other towns. In addition to providing a rewarding avocation to adults, the hospital is pleased to support high school students fulfilling community service requirements.
"Volunteering at BID-Needham gives you a good feeling because you're making a contribution to an important community organization," said Marianne Cooley, a volunteer in the hospital's beloved, diner-style Coffee Shop. "It's also enjoyable to have one-on-one contact with patients, physicians, staff and other volunteers."
Coffee Shop opportunities include serving customers, helping with food preparation, promotion, decorating, cashiering and scheduling. Gift shop opportunities include helping customers, cashiering, scheduling, promotion and buying merchandise.
Volunteers receive free lunch in the employee cafeteria and are entitled to park in the hospital's employee parking lot. They are trained by other volunteers and staff.
