Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham earns 2021 Leapfrog Top Hospital award for outstanding quality and safety
BID Needham is one of 46 hospitals nationwide to receive the prestigious award
Needham, Mass. – Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID Needham) was named a Top General Hospital nationally by The Leapfrog Group. Announced today, the Top General Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers recognized as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.
“We are honored and humbled that BID Needham has been recognized as a Top General Hospital in the country by The Leapfrog Group,” said John Fogarty, president of BID Needham. “Even during the challenges and struggles of this past year, our staff, clinicians, and leadership have proven once again that they provide exceptional care to our patients and our community, which we are proud to care for and serve.”
Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, BID Needham received a Top General Hospital distinction. A total of 149 top hospitals nationwide were selected as Top Hospitals, including:
- 8 Top Children’s Hospitals
- 46 Top General Hospitals
- 23 Top Rural Hospitals
- 72 Top Teaching Hospitals
The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.
“We are pleased to recognize Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the Needham community. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”
In addition to receiving the Leapfrog Top Hospital award, recently BID Needham earned an “A” grade for its continued commitment to patient safety in the Fall 2021 Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. The ratings signify how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm, including medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.
To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.
