Fear, embarrassment and uncertainty can stop some women from seeking treatment for heavy menstrual periods, pelvic pain or other gynecological-related issues that derail or diminish the quality of life.

At Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham, we can help with innovative treatments that include gentle (less invasive) surgery, and surgical and medical expertise second-to-none.

The Minimally Invasive Gynecologic (GYN) Surgery Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham, one of the premiere programs of its kind in New England, uses advanced techniques to perform common GYN procedures from fibroid removal to hysterectomy to permanent birth control. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) involves smaller incisions and that means quicker recovery time than traditional procedures. Our skilled and compassionate surgeons and support staff provide expert care in a warm and comfortable setting.

Our goal is simple - we want you to feel better. We will listen to your concerns, discuss the best surgical and medical options, provide education and guidance, take time to answer your questions, and help you choose the procedure that is right for you. It is our pleasure and privilege to be a true partner in your care.

Benefits of MIS GYN Surgery

Innovation in healthcare has led to many new advances in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. One of those treatment advances is minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for gynecologic issues. Compared to traditional open surgery, where surgeons must make an incision that can be several inches long, MIS is done through small incisions, usually one centimeter or less, which is about the width of a pencil eraser.

Minimally invasive surgery, also called laparoscopic surgery, uses specialized techniques, miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber optic flashlights, and high definition monitors. The surgeon places the miniature camera through one of the small incisions to see a magnified view of the anatomy during the operation.

Less Pain, Quicker Recovery

There are many benefits of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. They include

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery time
  • Fewer complications including reduced risk of infection

Appropriate Patients

It is important to note that while most gynecologic procedures can be performed using this advanced technique, it is not always the best choice for every patient. If you are severely overweight, or if you have had multiple prior abdominal surgeries that have created a build-up of scar tissue, then you may not be the best candidate for minimally invasive GYN surgery. Also, laparoscopic surgery for gynecologic cancer may not be the best option for patients with large tumors or cancer that has spread to several organs.

The experts at the BIDMC MIS Gynecologic Surgery program will work with you and your gynecologist to develop a health care plan that best meets your needs, and is the safest and most effective treatment option for you.
