Type of Testing: Samples are tested using a FDA Emergency Use authorization approved PCR assay. Currently we are using Nasopharyngeal Swab for testing.

Location: COVID-19 testing is located in the Outpatient Clinical Center Laboratory (OCC Lab) on the Ground Floor (campus map). All patients should arrive wearing a mask.

Upon arrival, patients should remain in their car and call the OCC Lab at 781-453-7702 to let staff know they have arrived. Our staff will give them further instructions and directions.

Please Note: If you need a COVID test due to travel, BID Needham will submit to insurance providers for coverage. Individuals will be required to pay if insurance does not cover the testing. You also have the option to pay the upfront fee and submit to your insurance or employer on your own for reimbursement.

Accessing Results: Please do not call the Main Laboratory for results. Results will be sent to the ordering provider and patients should contact them for results. Patients can find their results on the Mysite patient portal.

BID Needham is ONLY offering outpatient testing for COVID-19 for symptomatic patients & asymptomatic patients as defined below:

  • Patients 48-72 hours prior to all scheduled operative procedures
  • Patients 48-72 hours prior to scheduled high-risk non-operative procedures:
    -Outpatients 48-72 hours prior to initial receipt of cytotoxic chemotherapy, solid organ or stem cell transplant, long acting biologic therapy, cellular immunotherapy or high-dose corticosteroids
  • GI procedures
    -Upper endoscopy
    -Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
    -Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
    -Colonoscopy
  • Cardiac procedures
    -Trans esophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
    -Pacemaker placement
  • Pulmonary procedures performed outside of the OR
    -Interventional pulmonary (IP) procedures
    -Bronchoscopy
    -Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
    -Interventional radiology procedures (thoracentesis, lung biopsy, chest tube placement)
  • In office ENT procedures
  • Voice Speech and Swallow scope and singing procedures
  • Pregnant persons within expectation of delivery in the next 48 hours
  • Household contact of an immunocompromised host
  • Asymptomatic outpatients with close contact of a person with confirmed COVID-19
  • Asymptomatic outpatients when required for the purposes of visiting long term care facility residents, attending daycare or summer camps, or travel to or returning from a destination where testing results may impact on quarantine requirement
