Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is an advanced treatment for chronic, nonhealing wounds. You can receive this therapy at BID Needham’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.
Our doctors, nurses and technicians are credentialed by the hospital in both HBOT and wound care. They receive specialized HBOT training from Healogics, the nation’s largest wound care management company. This training includes an intensive course certified by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.

How does HBOT work?
Wounds need oxygen to heal. HBOT exposes your wound to 100% oxygen in a special, pressurized wound care chamber. Hyperbaric treatment helps wounds heal from the inside out and can speed up the healing process. HBOT has been shown to help:
- Build new blood vessels
- Fight infection
- Improve circulation
- Produce healthy tissue
- Reduce swelling
What can HBOT treat?
Studies show that HBOT may be beneficial for many types of non-healing wounds.
Specifically, we may recommend HBOT for:
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency (decreased blood flow)
- Chronic osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Crush injuries
- Diabetic ulcers of the feet and lower legs
- Necrotizing infections (fast-moving bacterial infections that cause tissues to die)
- Osteoradionecrosis (bone death caused by radiation exposure)
