The ninth annual Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham gala will honor prominent orthopedic surgeon Mark Haffenreffer, M.D., and retired business-man William F. Meagher, Jr., on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Newton Marriott Hotel.

"Each year the hospital recognizes two individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the hospital or the community," said Jeffrey H. Liebman, president and chief executive officer of BID-Needham. "This year's honorees have made significant contributions to both."

Dr. Haffenreffer and Mr. Meagher will be honored during the dinner that is the centerpiece of the 6 p.m.-midnight event. Proceeds this year will support the expansion of the hospital's South Wing, which will enhance patient care and privacy and house a new Emergency Department and 24 private patient rooms.

The evening will also include silent and live auctions and dancing to the Winiker Band. Some 500 guests are expected to attend. Briarwood Health Care is the lead sponsor.

Dr. Haffenreffer, a Dedham resident, practices at Needham Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Needham. He is an accomplished orthopedic surgeon whose clinical interest is primarily in minimally invasive joint replacements. He encourages the patient's active participation to ensure successful and speedy recovery. Dr. Haffenreffer has recently designed a new minimally invasive hip instrument with the manufacturers Depuy and Zimmer.

Dr. Haffenreffer received his bachelor of science in biology and his medical degree from Brown University, where he was also on the National Championship Heavyweight Crew Team. He began his association with BID-Needham as chief of orthopedics in 1983, after being resident and chief resident at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic program in Boston.

He is a member of the BID-Needham Board of Advisors and the Campaign Planning Committee. Dr. Haffenreffer and his wife, Nona, have two children.

William F. Meagher, Jr., a Needham resident, was managing partner of the Boston office of Arthur Andersen LLP from 1982 until 1995 and spent a total of 38 years there. Mr. Meagher now serves as a director of SkillSoft PLC; Dover Saddlery Inc. and MacGray Corp.

Mr. Meagher and his late wife, Pat, raised their five children in Needham. Mr. Meagher and his wife, Ellen, married in 2005 and enjoy seven children and five grandchildren. Mr. Meagher's many civic interests include service on the BID-Needham Board of Trustees from the early 1990's through 2001, and an additional two years as chairman of the board. After stepping down as chair, Mr. Meagher continued his work at the hospital and on the Board of Trustees. He was a major contributor and chaired the last BID-Needham capital campaign and currently is chair of the BID-Needham Board of Advisors.

Other organizations in which Mr. Meagher is active include the Greater Boston YMCA, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Horizons for Youth, United Way and the Family Counseling and Guidance Centers. In his free time, Mr. Meagher can be found on the football field at NHS helping to coach the varsity football team.
