Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham Awarded an ‘A’ for Patient Safety by the Leapfrog Group

April 29, 2021

Needham, Mass. – For the second time in a row, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID Needham) has earned an “A” grade for its continued commitment to patient safety in the Spring 2021 Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. The ratings signify how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm, including medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

“At BID Needham, our highest priority is patient safety,” said John M. Fogarty, President of BID Needham. “We are proud to receive an ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group again this spring, as the award reflects the continued hard work and commitment of our clinicians and staff to providing outstanding care for our patients throughout the pandemic and beyond.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are determined with the guidance of an expert panel using 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data. Grades of A, B, C, D and F are assigned to more than 2,700 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but BID Needham shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”
